I began in the Offshore racing business because I had a 3 year non compete with Sykes Enterprises, Inc. after the Pooling of Interest Merger of my company DiagSoft, Inc. in the end of 1996 in Tampa, Fl. I lived in Florida since the end of 1995, Jon Gordon had opened our DiagSoft HQ next to the Hyatt near the Tampa Airport in 1995…
After selling some of my SYKES stock, I purchased a new Lazzara 76′ Grand Salon Yacht also built in Tampa in 1997, I went to the Annual Lazzara Miami Beach Yacht show and had dinner at the Lazzara mansion (they rented one each year to reduce costs for all the of their people working at the Miami Boat show) i.e. sleeping bags on the floor, and all rooms… At the dinner I asked Dick Lazzara if I were to buy a Offshore race boat, would Lazzara be interested in being my sponsor? He said “don’t ask if your not serious!” I discussed having his Lazzara Yacht company also manage my race boat…
1998 Lazzara selected a 34′ Baja Outlaw, and he hired Gene Weeks to be the Team Lazzara Race Team manager, and be the Throttleman… Team Lazzara painted the TalkStory Offshore Racing, Inc. 34′ Baja, managed it, and I just showed up to the Ft. Meyers APBA Offshore race run by Mr. Gene Whipp of Sarasota… Our first evening before the actual race we had blown an engine during practice that day… Dick asked how are we going to get the blown engine out? Dick had secured a loaner engine from Mastery Engine Center. We we at a Chart House restaurant? I thought for a moment, knowing my Baja was on its trailer, why not call a 18 wheeler tow truck, they have a boom high enough and available all night for big rigs… My son, Dicks son, and Team Lazzara worked all night and pulled the blown engine, replaced it and we started the replacement engine a few minutes before the 1998 Ft. Meyers APBA Offshore Race, we won 2nd Place on our very first race! Mastery Engine F2 with Michael Allweiss and dad and Mastery won 1st Place… That was my first meeting with Michael Allweiss, short as it was…
I was asked at the end of 1998 to take over the APBA Offshore Racing from Mr. Whipp. I found out Michael Allweiss was also interviewed as a possible candidate. I said let’s all meet, I had Gene Weeks, my old friend Donald Harris, and my wife Krystle with me in both of these meetings…
I said let’s have Michael Allweiss run it, I will invest (I had no experience in Event Management at that time)…
Michael asked me how are we going to get the APBA Parent to allow us to take over the APBA Offshore Racing division for profit, the APBA parent was a 99 year old not for profit organization… I said tell them we want to meet and we are bringing our “deep pockets racers” with us… Kraft, Allweiss, Hook, Forest Barber, Nemshoff… We met in the Chicago O’Hare Airport with the APBA parent rep. I spoke most of the time to keep the meeting going… We got their approval.

I see many efforts on LinkedIN and other sites to generate a portfolio of plausible Business Plans. What is missing is the actual ability to FUND these hopeful Global Entrepreneurs…
I reviewed the Objet line of 3D Printers about a year ago, and was blown away by the quality of parts, Sales Samples, etc. that can be made with this middle to high end line of 3D printing. I recommend that you consider this level of capability for commercial endeavors. In my EDU Plan I included the use of a 3D Printer in the Entrepreneur Incubators. This area has exploded in new companies and designs possible for a Entrepreneur trying to sell their Business Plan to Investors. Business Incubators will most likely offer this equipment for their tenants, if not, you will now find many commercial Service Bureau’s including the announcement from Staples, and other retail stores.
The EDU – Entrepreneur Development University is designed to be a Global Angel Investment Holding Company with affiliates from Industry, Universities both private and Business Colleges, working together with the numerous Crowdfunding Groups around the World. The experience I gained working in the MRTC (State of Hawaii) Business Incubator in Kihei, Maui was the reason I decided to work towards helping and consulting for other Entrepreneur’s even if they were not in a Business Incubator but working out of their homes…
I received a visit during our DiagSoft COMDEX show from a contingent of Hawaiians (10+) sent by Hawaii to find possible High Technology companies to move to Hawaii for the Hawaiian economy and future growth. Shortly afterwards I received a letter signed by the Governor of Hawaii asking me to consider relocating DiagSoft to Hawaii. At my next DiagSoft Board of Directors meeting, I presented the letter from the Governor of Hawaii to our Intel Board Member, he said, we have no problem with that. Two days later I was in Oahu visiting the State of Hawaii’s Manoa Innovation Center. They told me about another State Incubator in Maui with a planned Supercomputer Center as part of it. That night I was in Maui. I rented a large office from the State of Hawaii Business Incubator that included office furniture, Internet connection, and a Business Library, shared Conference Room, etc. DiagSoft, Inc Pacific Rim HQ was open for business. It was 1992!
I founded Big Kahuna Productions a dba owned by DiagSoft, Inc. with my brother in law Chris King, and shortly after that, Richard Mann from Aptos joined us. The purpose of Big Kahuna Productions was to do 3D animation for Interactive Computer Based Learning, Richard had his own Video Production company and worked with Chris and I on video’s we decided we needed, he also did several Maui Television commercials, like the Hyatt Regency Kanapali Golf Tournament that was on national television. Chris found 3 people in Maui, and we had David Cox from Aptos a 3D animator to train the new hires in Maui on 3D Studio MAX. Donald Harris a close friend came and visited with us in Maui, the longest time was about two weeks… I had Evan Lau and Rick Farrington working in the Maui DiagSoft for several months.
One day Evan called and said “we go to China with the Governor!” I said what? Evan and I went to Hong Kong and Taipei with the Governor of Hawaii, DiagSoft was presented by the Governor as one example of High Tech in Hawaii on the Hawaii Aloha on Tour trade mission, we were accompanied by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The meeting in Hong Kong had about 300+ of Hong Kongs top corporation Executives and Investors. Hong Kong showed great respect for the Governor of Hawaii, it was on this trade mission that I learned that Hawaii was 63% asian. We had a red carpet entry in Hong Kong and a Dragon reception and parade, awesome experience for me and all of us from Hawaii, which included Kona Coffee, and many other Hawaiian companies as part of this trade mission. Hong Kong turned out the red carpet, I was introduced by the Governor and spoke to the large gathering of Hong Kong’s elite. QAPlus was famous in both Hong Kong and Taipei. Taipei also had a red carpet and Dragon parade reception, and an equally large group of Taiwans top Business Executives. Truly an awesome experience for DiagSoft, Inc.

Then in Jan. 1999, my wife and I separated, and I retained ownership of my basket of websites due to our divorce, she got the house in California, etc. and I got the websites. Typical of a divorce… I replaced all of the previous work of my basket of websites.

In today’s America we have Jr. Colleges, State Colleges, and Major Universities such as Stanford, Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc. Plus, Business Colleges such as Heald Business College, Phoenix University, etc.
Student loans are being sold via telemarketing Call Centers using Outbound Telemarketing, etc. And many students have difficulty in paying for their education in today’s world. The cost of Education has continued to increase on an annual basis.
How can we help those that need a little help in the direction of Education?

The new 4K HDTV will require greater amounts of Bits over the Internet, like about 3TB – 8TB per movie… 4K HDTV is here, Camcorders and Digital Camera’s are here that can output 4K video.
BluRay or something similar, will evolve to handle this larger 4K HDTV, and we will once more see a new format DVD, therefore new 4K DVD players will appear on the local retail shelf’s just like we watched happen for HDTV…

Today’s Business Incubators have a primary purpose of renting office space, now I know that many offer much more, but the difference in offering and making available is the cost. And Entrepreneurs need advice and counsel more than they need a generic course on being a Entrepreneur. The effort in Florida has networked many Incubators and added a Virtual Entrepreneur Incubator, yet the local news could pay more attention and dramatically improve the success of these incubators. A Entrepreneur Incubator needs to be promoted. Like the movie “Field of Dreams” build it and they will come…is true only if people know about it…
How about a Librarian greeter that says come on in kid if you have a idea and we will discuss it with you and give you instant feedback, this can be done over the Internet. The issue of Intellectual Property is important. Now add some Marketing and Sales Review from the Internet and in few days, the idea will have some depth for the Entrepreneur to decide if further effort is warranted. But before we get to this stage, the Entrepreneur has to have been selected from a larger constant flowing number of entries. (EDU Plan)
Setup a room with some PC’s and Video Editing Booth, connect to the Internet, and expect our Entrepreneur’s to seek the Incubator out for a helping hand to build their dream business.
The Maui Research & Technology Center was thus, we know, we lived and worked there from 92-96, the folks that worked for the State of Hawaii were just like you and me, they wanted in the worst way to make the MRTC a success. All were supportive, but without any working capital even for themselves it was just cheap rent. There was an advantage however, the MRTC was located next door to one of the most incredible SuperComputers on the Planet, yep, next door there on Maui.
I don’t really understand what you do with a SuperComputer other than mathematical analysis of the stars from the dishes on top of Haleakala the hugh dormant volcano.
The SuperComputer was connected to T3’s and that gave the MRTC Broadband from the start and we had the ability to communicate via the internet to DiagSoft, Inc. so we were doing business really simple – we were connected. I created ETSC in the most creative place, Maui.
During this time Chris King my brother in law introduced me to Richard Mann and we started Big Kahuna Productions. Richard knew Hollywood, and the art of video production, and I wanted to do Interactive Videos similar to the IBM SNA interactive LaserDisk Project that I worked on with with Saroj Kar in Sunnyvale at the beginning of the LaserDisk (1979), a master cost over $50Kea. and was a throw away if wrong.
Document Storage and Retrieval and Advanced Office Automation Workstations were my skill set.
Late 1970′s, I created CARMS Computer Assisted Records Management System using a Tandem NonStop for Natural Language Query Retrieval of Documents stored on the Microform Data Systems UltraStrip a strip of microfilm with a 300X reduction image size, also spec’d a Microdata Reality System for the low end. We could retrieve any page in a million pages in less than ten seconds. This was important for Power Plants that had millions of pages of D drawings, to standard letter forms, since we microfilmed documents of almost any size, we then microfilmed the microfilm taking the image from the 35mm frame and microfilming that frame again another 10X which would result in 300X-600X reduction and full blowback. That is right, we microfilmed the microfilm in a unit made by Microform Data Systems.
Today we would use a good scanner and the capture time would be small increments compared to the manual microfilm process. And the Auto Indexing using OCR would reduce the keying of Indexes like we did with the Microform systems. CARMS was my attempt to move Microform Data Systems into a more hybrid Digital and Microfilm database and evolve Microform Data from Micrographics into the Digital Age. Arnold Silverman replaced my mentor Dean Mack the former CEO.
CARMS is a frame/page/sector indexed sector of digital content or film content. The next generation of CARMS is for today’s Mass Storage Facility that could fit into your briefcase, the INDEX is based on Metatags, the more refinement of the Keys and the Correlation of Stuff (rDBMS), Neural Network, etc. will improve the reduction of the number of hits.
I often today think about the possibilities of CARMS which is meant to create a Paperless Office…
SQL is todays DBMS architecture, and is complicated and difficult for non programmers to use at the capability level that we had with the MSDOS CONDOR rDBMS in 1982.
The AiLibrary needs a simple DBMS, perhaps Bento?
The AiLibrary will store locally.
We need to train out of the box thinking for Entrepreneurs, and provide them the workspace to grow their ideas, and help them from the Business Management and Sales standpoint until the idea is ready to launch from their own successful business.

The opportunities for Entrepreneurs has increased with the advancements in Corporate efforts to create creative newco’s from the Nations Business Incubators, and corporations such as Microsoft, Apple, Google, Yahoo, etc. Most are using Developers APP Stores as the replacement for what we used to call VARS.

When Intel offered to invest in DiagSoft, I knew I needed skills that I did not have, so typical of Silicon Valley, I contacted people I knew, my old Bosses at Microform Data Systems to become DiagSoft Board of Director Advisors, they were concerned about legal protection for Board Members and we could not afford coverage, so they became Board Advisors, often meeting with me offsite or offhours… When the time came to repurchase DiagSoft’s stock from Intel, I went to IBM and DEC and requested an advance of royalties, to be recouped at 50% per period, to not drown out our cash flow, and settled with Intel and repurchased our stock. I owned 100% of DiagSoft, Inc. at the time of sale to Sykes, Inc.
Both Intel and Sykes, Inc. did extensive due diligence prior to investment and merger. This included Work For Hire Agreements, Clear Copyrights and history of QAPlus and all versions. Escrow of Source Code (periodically), Copyrights, Trademarks, etc. or they would not invest, or acquire… Debt to Equity Covenants, etc.
IBM requested Source Code Escrow, and clear proof of title in order to OEM QAPlus.

Today, ten years later I found this important Original Work by SRI on Distance Learning circa 1995. The video is important because it shows how important Software Patents are and the misapplication of them to Process Patents, etc. will prove that one can argue that everything has already been invented… Yet the ISO 9000 goals are to continually improve the Quality Process and hence the need for Application evolution that the current Software Patent system is inhibiting. A new method of Software Intellectual Property Rights is needed to allow the growth of Applications in the future.
Possible solutions to Software Patent system is to reorg it, not replace it.
A possible reorg would include adding the details (TBD) that allow a Judge to make a decision for Original Work History in visual timeframe increments, the Software Patent has a hugh history and backlog to consider. Then perhaps use the STRINGS (i.e. evolution, new works done in a cleanroom environment, ie. no knowledge or access of a previous Patented work, and the new products evolution may have moved to a new Platform and OS in perhaps a decade increment, in order to decide core intent of infringement a clearer and more concise overview is needed. This will speed up the process. Start with the nearest issues.
The future of Intellectual Property Rights, Patents, Copyrights, and Trademarks will undoubtably require a lower level of research, which will require more ExpertWitness resources and generate opportunities especially in consideration of software patents.
With today’s software architecture comprised with Vendor SDK’s, Frameworks, Open Source, etc. The actual code written for an iPhone App is a good example for further review.
And Who is the Original Works owner?
Will probably have some validity for future Intellectual Property Rights.
